    The New Periodontal Disease Classification
What Does This Mean to Your Practice and Your Patients?

David K. Okano, D.D.S., M.S. is a Wyoming native who practiced periodontics and dental implant surgery in Rock Springs, Wyoming until 2016. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. David is a former President of the Wyoming Dental Association, long-term ADA Delegate from Wyoming and has just completed his second term as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Periodontology.
At this time, David is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah School of Dentistry in Salt Lake City, Utah and serves as Section Head of Periodontics. He is honored to be the speaker for this year’s WDA Midwinter Meeting and is always happy to return to Wyoming, especially to renew friendships with long-time friends from Wyoming.

The new 2017 periodontal disease classification was recently released and is the first update on periodontal diseases since 1999. Of particular note is the new peri-implant disease classification. The new disease classification system is a completely different method of diagnosing the periodontal diseases. As is common with many medical conditions, the new periodontal disease classification now utilizes terminology of stages for the extent of perio-dontal destruction and grade for the consideration of risk for periodontitis. Utilizing the new terms of stage and grade, the clinician can better correlate periodontal treatment to the extent of periodontal loss.

Goals for this course will be:
Understand how to provide a periodontal diagnosis using the new staging and grading system
Correlate periodontal treatment to the stage of periodontitis
Understand periodontal disease classifications for other periodontal conditions
Become familiar with peri-implant diseases of peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis
